The 2009 Steel City Tactical Rifle Championship has been sent out. The match will be a one day format over two days on May 30th and 31st. The BGM hasn’t decided on which day – but most likely we will be shooting on Saturday.

Additional Information about the 2009 Steel City Tactical Carbine Championship

Application and Signup information for 2009 Steel City Tactical Carbine Championship

From the match director:

Hello shooters and Happy New Year!

Attached is an application and information for this year’s Steel City Tactical Carbine Championship. This info will be posted on the message boards and on the Steel City website in a week or so, but I wanted to send it out to our regular shooters a bit early.

The match will be held the last weekend of May and will again have a one day format with the option to shoot either Saturday or Sunday. This will allow us to hopefully accommodate more shooters and make the stages a bit more elaborate.

Each day’s participation will be capped at 75-80 shooters. I suspect that Saturday will be the more popular of the two days, so if you want to shoot Saturday, please don’t wait too long to send in your application and match fee.

The Steel City board of directors has agreed to allow us to use more of the deep bays for this year’s match and that’s why the match fee is $60 vs $50 last year. The longer bays will allow us to have better and more challenging stages normally associated with rifle shooting. There’ll still be house clearing and up close blastin’ as well.

Prizes will be awarded via random drawing. Depending on sponsor participation, we’ll try to award something nice to the category winners as well. All prize distribution will depend on sponsor participation. I’ll keep all registered shooters informed of prize details as we get closer to match time.

Just a reminder, we’ll have our regular quarterly rifle match later this month on Saturday, January 31st weather permitting.

Please let me know if there are any questions. See you at the range soon!

David

The message on the board from the Match Director: Congratulations from BGM Tactical Weapons Team on the 1st year B-day Party:

Shooters,
I will not be able to put on a match this Saturday or Sunday. I have a set of grand twins with a one year old birthday party Saturday. Arab club is having a mass clean-up on Sunday. So, how about we have a match on Sunday the 28th of September. A match on Saturday will mess with the IDPA HGC match. Don’t want to do that. Since this will be on an odd day, how about we have an odd match. Lets drag out and dust off those AK47′s and SKS’s. Take them to the Arab range a shoot until the barrels melt off. One stage will require you to shoot from the hip just like you see on Fox News. While you are running… If you don’t have a gun to shoot, come anyway and bring some 7.62×39 or 5.45×39 ammo. Bring at least 100 rounds. Two classes to shoot in. Mags and stripper clips.. Should be lots of fun. We will start around 9:00 am. Set up at 8:oo. $15.00 to shoot. $20.00 to watch us make fools of ourselves.

See you then,
Scott

After re-reading the match description it seems that this is just going to be some organized fun for bragging rights of who is a better shooter. Plus it is reason enough to dust of the ol’ SKS you bough 15 years ago for $50 and test out some of the 30,000 rounds of the Norinco you’ve had in storage for 20 years. It sounds like it could be a loosely run stage setup where we can go out meet the North Alabama shooters and make friends. You can count me in. What about you? I plan to reach out and let them know how many people we are going to bring up with us. I have three so far. Let me know asap.

Don’t forget that this Saturday we have the Pistol Steel Plate Match at Pleasant Grove FOP. In addition to the steel plate match we will be having a 3 Gun Practice. We plan to run a couple different style stages with walls, steel plates, sporting clays, and silhouette targets. We may also have a couple swingers in place. The swingers will be on loan form Lee Knobloch.

Lee has been kind enough to grant us use of his personal swingers. Lee is a fantastic pistol competitor and if you ever want to know something about shooting or just want to chat give him a call over at the FOP range, 205.744.2600.

Hopefully the weather will be good. We always go even in inclimate weather. It adds to practical action of the the shoot. Check the weather.

According to an Associated Press article at AL.com a bill requiring stun gun permits, or often called Tasers, is being considered. The proposed fee for the permit is $1 and the fate of the Legistlative Bill will be decided at a later date.

Bill would require a permit in Alabama to carry a stun gun

The Associated Press – April 09, 2008

MONTGOMERY — A bill under consideration by the Alabama Legislature would require a person to have a permit to carry a concealed stun gun or electroshock weapon on his or her person or in a car.

The permits would be the same as those currently issued by county sheriffs for carrying a concealed firearm and would cost $1.

The bill sponsored by Rep. Steve Hurst of Munford was debated in a public hearing Wednesday before the House Judiciary Committee. Committee chairman Rep. Marcel Black of Tuscumbia said the panel would vote on the measure at a later meeting.

Hurst said the devices can be used as weapons and requiring permits would help prevent them from being misused.

"I don’t want them to get in the wrong hands. I would hate to see children or teenagers having TASER parties and shooting each other," Hurst said.

The stun guns are often used by law enforcement officers as a way of controlling an unruly person without using deadly force.

Keane. "This massive reduction in ammunition would translate into substantially lower sales and profitability, and ultimately force major ammunition manufacturers to abandon the market. In turn, there would be a severe shortage of serialized ammunition and all consumers, including federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, would be faced with substantial price increases. Ammunition will go from costing pennies to several dollars per cartridge."

The domestic small arms ammunition industry, utilizing modern manufacturing processes and distribution practices, produces between 10 and 12 billion ammunition cartridges a year at already low-profit margins. The three largest domestic manufacturers (who collectively account for the vast majority of the market) produce an estimated 20 million rounds of ammunition in a single day. Ammunition manufacturers could not serialize their product without hundreds of millions of dollars in capital investment to build the new factories that would be needed in order to meet the requirements of bullet serialization. At the same time, hundreds of millions of dollars of existing plants and equipment, and decades of manufacturing (cost-saving) efficiencies, would be rendered obsolete.

"Bullet Serialization is dangerous and not practical," continued Keane. "As legislation that would mandate bullet serialization not only threatens law-abiding gun owners but our industry’s ability to supply the nation’s law enforcement officers and military with high-quality ammunition, we encourage all citizens of Alabama to contact members of the Senate Judiciary Committee and urge them to oppose this bill."
